Softball Game Preview: Wesson Cobras vs. Loyd Star Hornets

The Wesson Cobras will head out on the road to challenge the Loyd Star Hornets at 6:30 p.m. on Monday. Loyd Star took a loss in their last game and will be looking to turn the tables on Wesson, who comes in off a win.

Loyd Star will be up against a hot Wesson squad: the team just extended their winning streak to three. Wesson walked away with a 5-1 win over Florence on Friday.

Maddie Sanders made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She pitched seven innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than one walk any time she's pitched this season. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with three RBI and one double.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Kenslie Carter, who scored two runs and stole two bases while going 3-for-3.

Meanwhile, while it was Loyd Star who put the first points on the board on Saturday, it was Stone who put up more. Loyd Star fell just short of Stone by a score of 3-2. The match marked the Hornets' lowest-scoring contest so far this season.

Maddie Kate Britt and Madison McKenzie stepped up to the plate in a big way. Britt went 1-for-3 with one triple, one run, and one RBI, while McKenzie went 3-for-4 with one triple and one run. What's more, McKenzie posted three hits, the most she's had since back in February of 2024.

Having lost for the first time this season, Loyd Star fell to 4-1. As for Wesson, their record is now 3-0.

The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Monday as neither team is afraid to steal. Wesson has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.7 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Loyd Star struggles in that department as they've been averaging 5.4 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
