Baseball Game Preview: Mathis Pirates vs. George West Longhorns

For the second straight game, Mathis will face off against George West. The Pirates will venture away from home to face off against the Longhorns at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Mathis is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.5 runs per game this season.

Mathis barely beat George West the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. The Pirates never let the Longhorns get on the board and left with an 11-0 win on Tuesday. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Pirates.

Jojo Gutierrez made a big impact no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run while striking out 11 over six innings pitched. He also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Mathis is undefeated when he allows at most one earned run, but 2-6 otherwise. Gutierrez was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with one stolen base, one run, and one double.

In other batting news, Brody Bernal was incredible, going 2-for-4 with one home run and three RBI. That home run marked the first that he has launched this season. Isaac Rivas was another key player, going 3-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.

Mathis always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .583. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as George West only posted an OBP of .250.

Mathis' record now sits at 5-6. As for George West, their defeat dropped their record down to 9-12.

The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Friday as neither team is afraid to steal. Mathis has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 6.4 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like George West struggles in that department as they've been averaging 2.7 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
