Baseball Recap: Watertown Drops Highest Score of Season Against Fort Atkinson

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Watertown). They never let the Fort Atkinson Blackhawks get on the board and left with a 14-0 win on Saturday. While the Goslings didn't have the best season last year (they finished 11-14), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past.

Eliot Roethle made a splash no matter where he played. On the mound, he struck out eight batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in four consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 3-for-4 with one run and one double. Those three hits gave him a new career-high.

In other pitching news, Keenan Eckert looked comfortable as he pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than two walks any time he's pitched this season.

Back at the plate, the team relied heavily on Calvin Hurtgen, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with four RBI, two runs, and one stolen base. Watertown is undefeated when Hurtgen posts two or more runs, but 3-4 otherwise. Conner Kletsch was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.

Watertown kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 17 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least nine hits in five consecutive matchups.

Watertown's victory bumped their record up to 8-4. As for Fort Atkinson, they have been struggling recently as they've lost seven of their last eight games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 5-7 record this season.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Watertown will face off against DeForest at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Fort Atkinson, they will host Lake Mills at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. The Blackhawks' pitchers better be ready for this one: the L-Cats have averaged an impressive 7 runs per game this season.
