Softball Recap: Varina Has No Trouble Against Hopewell

Varina barely beat Hopewell the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. Varina blew past Hopewell 16-8 on Tuesday. The win continues a trend for Varina in their matchups with Hopewell: they've now won seven in a row.

Rylee Geer was a major factor no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, tossing seven innings while giving up three earned (and five unearned) runs off six hits. Geer was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring three runs while going 2-for-4.

In other batting news, Varina got a massive performance out of Mariah Stone, who scored two runs and stole two bases while going 4-for-4. Stone is crushing it when it comes to stolen bases: she's snagged at least two every time she's taken the field this season. Samiah Green was another key player, scoring three runs and stealing three bases while getting on base in three of her five plate appearances.

Varina always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .591. The last time their OBP was this high was back in May of 2024.

Varina now has a winning record of 2-1. As for Hopewell, their loss dropped their record down to 0-2.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Varina will have some time to savor their victory since their next game is a little ways off: they'll take on Powhatan at 6:00 p.m. on April 8. As for Hopewell, they will look to defend their home field on Thursday against Prince George at 6:00 p.m.
