Basketball Recap: Safiyah Sugapong's Big Game Can't Quite Lead La Jolla Country Day over Centennial

If La Jolla Country Day was feeling good fresh off their 66-20 takedown of Canyon two weeks ago, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The La Jolla Country Day Torreys fell just short of the Centennial Huskies by a score of 61-58 on Saturday. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as the Torreys came into the contest with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 35th, while the Huskies are ranked 139th).

La Jolla Country Day's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Safiyah Sugapong, who posted 15 points along with five assists and five rebounds. That's the most boards Sugapong has posted since back in December of 2023. The team also got some help courtesy of Mahlia Washington, who had eight points and six rebounds.

Even though they lost, La Jolla Country Day smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 16 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive rebounds in six consecutive matchups.

With the loss, La Jolla Country Day broke their three-game winning streak and moved their record to 10-6. As for Centennial, they have been performing well recently as they've won eight of their last ten games, which provided a massive bump to their 8-8 record this season.
