Basketball Recap: Academy of the Holy Names Takes a Loss

Academy of the Holy Names and Cardinal Mooney squared off in some playoff action on Thursday, but Academy of the Holy Names had to settle for second. They had to suffer through a 73-32 loss at the hands of the Cardinal Mooney Cougars. The loss continues a trend for the Jaguars in their matchups with the Cougars: they've now lost five in a row.

Academy of the Holy Names lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Kayla Gibson, who posted 11 points. What's more, Gibson also posted a 57% field goal percentage, which is the highest she's posted since back in December of 2024. Hailey Scott was another key player, putting up ten points.

Riley Martin went supernova for Cardinal Mooney, going 6 of 7 from beyond the arc en route to 23 points and five assists. Martin is also on a roll when it comes to shooting accuracy, as she's posted one of at least 45% in the last five games she's played. Another player making a difference was Talia Busser, who went 6 for 7 to rack up 17 points.

Academy of the Holy Names now has a losing record at 13-14. As for Cardinal Mooney, the win (which was their 11th in a row) raised their record to 18-9.

Academy of the Holy Names does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Cardinal Mooney, they didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 63-50 victory against Tampa Catholic on the 8th.
