Basketball Recap: Mountainair's Run of Four Straight Wins Now Over

Mountainair easily dispatched Dora last Friday, but unfortunately both the margin and the ultimate result were a different story in this one. The Mountainair Mustangs fell just short of the Ruidoso Warriors by a score of 44-42 on Saturday. The Mustangs lost against the Warriors in their previous head to head back in December of 2023, too, but the margin this time around was much closer than the 58-29 score last time.

Ruidoso's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Augustine Saiz led the charge by dropping a double-double on 15 points and 12 rebounds. Saiz's evening made it five games in a row in which he has scored at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Mason Fikany, who posted 11 points.

Mountainair moved to 7-4 with that loss, which also ended their four-game winning streak. As for Ruidoso, they are on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five matches, which provided a nice bump to their 5-2 record this season.

Mountainair will get a bit of extra time to process the defeat as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on Quemado at 4:00 p.m. on January 4, 2025. As for Ruidoso, they will finish 2024 at home by hosting East Mountain at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday. Ruidoso is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 57.1 points per game this season.
