Softball Recap: Hillman Comes Up Short

After flying high against Pellston last Wednesday, Hillman came back down to earth. The Tigers fell just short of the Standish-Sterling Panthers by a score of 5-4 on Thursday.

Gretchen Weiland was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 11 batters over 6.2 innings while giving up three earned (and two unearned) runs off eight hits (and not a single walk). She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up a single walk in six consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI.

In other batting news, Madelyn Oswald was cooking despite her team's loss, going 2-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI. She has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last three times she's played. Another player making a difference was Abigail Oswald, who went 1-for-3 with two runs.

Hillman has traveled a rocky road recently, having lost three of their last four games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 16-6 record this season. As for Standish-Sterling, the win was the eighth in a row for them, bringing their record up to 16-11.

While Hillman had to take the loss, they won't have to wait long to give it another shot: the pair will be back at it again later today.
