Basketball Recap: Fairbanks Snaps Four-Game Streak of Wins at Home

After flying high against Northeastern last Saturday, Fairbanks came back down to earth. The Fairbanks Panthers took a 55-37 bruising from the Buckeye Valley Barons on Monday. The Panthers were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Barons apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in November of 2021.

Fairbanks' defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Mara Vicari, who posted ten points. Vicari is trending in the right direction considering she's improved her point production for three straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Claire Meihls, who scored ten points and five rebounds.

Even though they lost, Fairbanks smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 13 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 13 offensive rebounds in three consecutive games.

Leading Buckeye Valley to victory were Addison Graham and Ella Hazelrigg. Graham went 5 for 8 en route to 10 points along with five assists and five steals, while Hazelrigg went 6 of 15 on her way to 16 points and six boards. Hazelrigg's evening made it three games in a row in which she has scored at least ten points. Avelina Wagner was another key player, putting up eight points and five steals.

Fairbanks' loss ended a four-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 11-9. As for Buckeye Valley, the win was the ninth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 18-2.

Fairbanks didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next matchup, a 59-46 defeat against Centerburg on the 5th. Buckeye Valley has also already played their next contest, a 33-27 victory against Columbus Academy on the 4th.
