Gateway scored the most points they've had this season on Friday, but it wasn't enough. They took a 42-38 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Hempfield Area Spartans. The Gators gained 115 more yards on the day, but it was the Spartans that made the best use of them.

Gateway's loss came despite strong showings from Mayson Mitchell and Tyree Gowder. Mitchell threw for 381 yards and three touchdowns, while Gowder picked up 128 receiving yards and one TD.

Hempfield Area had a senior duo take command as Dominic Detruf threw for 342 yards and three touchdowns and Aidan Stinebiser rushed for 85 yards and a pair of scores on only 12 carries. Those 342 passing yards set a new season-high mark for Detruf.

Gateway has traveled a rocky road recently, having lost four of their last five games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 3-7 record this season. Those losses can't be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 28.8 points over those games. As for Hempfield Area, the win got them back to even at 5-5.

As of now, neither Gateway nor the Spartans have any future games scheduled.
