Baseball Game Preview: Canton Warriors vs. Wellsboro Hornets

The Canton Warriors will square off against the Wellsboro Hornets at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. Canton will be strutting in after a win while Wellsboro will be coming in after a defeat.

Canton came out on top against Sugar Valley Rural on Wednesday thanks in part to the team's impressive four-run first inning. The Warriors had just enough and edged out the Phoenix 8-7. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Warriors have posted since March 18th.

The team relied heavily on Ben Fitch, who went 2-for-4 with four stolen bases, three runs, and one double. He has become a key player for Canton: the team is 5-2 when he posts at least two runs, but 1-7 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Reed Taylor, who went 3-for-4 with one stolen base, one double, and one RBI.

Meanwhile, Wellsboro fought the good fight in their extra-innings matchup against South Williamsport on Saturday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Mountaineers by a score of 5-4. The Hornets have struggled against the Mountaineers recently, as the game was their sixth consecutive lost meeting.

Coen Tennis was cooking despite his team's loss, going 3-for-4 with three RBI, one stolen base, and one run.

Canton is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four games. That's provided a nice bump to their 6-9 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.8 runs over those games. As for Wellsboro, their loss dropped their record down to 6-8.

Canton came out on top in a nail-biter against Wellsboro in their previous meeting back in May of 2024, sneaking past 5-3. Will the Warriors repeat their success, or do the Hornets have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
