Baseball Recap: Dynamic Duo of Julius Deleon and EJ Montemayor Lead Mathis to Victory

Mathis's game last Friday was a loss, but they didn't let that memory haunt them on Tuesday. They never let the Aransas Pass Panthers get on the board and left with an 8-0 victory. The win continues a trend for the Pirates in their matchups with the Panthers: they've now won seven in a row.

EJ Montemayor and Julius Deleon made a big impact while hitting and pitching. Throwing, Montemayor didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits over four innings pitched. Meanwhile, Deleon pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off three hits. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-low in walks (zero). At bat, Montemayor went a perfect 3-for-3 with one RBI, while Deleon went a perfect 1-for-1 with two stolen bases and two RBI. Those three hits gave Montemayor a new career-high.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Jozaih Gutierrez, who scored two runs and stole two bases while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances. He has become a key player for Mathis: the team is 2-1 when he posts at least two stolen bases, but 3-10 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Christopher Veliz, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with one stolen base and one RBI.

Mathis always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .559. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.

Mathis' victory bumped their record up to 5-11. As for Aransas Pass, they have been struggling recently as they've lost six of their last eight contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 6-8-1 record this season.

Mathis will welcome George West at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Aransas Pass, they will square off against West Oso at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Aransas Pass' pitchers better be ready for this one: West Oso has averaged an impressive 7.4 runs per game this season.
