Preview: Monterey Trail Mustangs vs. Burbank Titans
Monterey Trail and Burbank are an even 5-5 against one another since December of 2015, but not for long. The Monterey Trail Mustangs will head out on the road to challenge the Burbank Titans at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as Monterey Trail comes in on eight and Burbank on seven.
Even though Laguna Creek scored an imposing 55 points on Friday, Monterey Trail still came out on top. Monterey Trail strolled past Laguna Creek with points to spare, taking the game 72-55. Given Monterey Trail's advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 32nd, while Laguna Creek is ranked 199th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Monterey Trail's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Kentrell Kelly, who dropped a double-double on 19 points and 12 rebounds. Kelly is on a roll when it comes to rebounds, as he's now pulled down eight or more in the last four games he's played. Another player making a difference was Brandon Gibson Jr, who scored 19 points along with seven rebounds.
Meanwhile, Burbank didn't have too much trouble with River City on the road on Wednesday as they won 70-52.
Monterey Trail pushed their record up to 17-1 with that victory, which was their third straight on the road. They've been dominating during the games in that stretch too, as they've won by an average of 32.33 points. As for Burbank, they are on a roll lately: they've won 11 of their last 13 matches, which provided a nice bump to their 16-5 record this season.
Monterey Trail strolled past Burbank in their previous matchup back in February of 2023 by a score of 78-60. Will Monterey Trail repeat their success, or does Burbank have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
