Football Recap: Grants Comes Up Short

Grants and St. Pius X squared off in some playoff action on Friday, but Grants had to settle for second. They took a blow against the Sartans, falling 48-7. The Pirates have struggled against the Sartans recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive lost matchup.

Even if they lost, Grants' defensive line still kept up the pressure with four sacks. Gary Chavez refused to say out of the backfield, picking up 1.5 sacks all by himself.

St. Pius X's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Hershul Olloway Jr, who rushed for 147 yards and one touchdown on only nine carries. Olloway Jr is crushing it when it comes to rushing yards: he's rushed for at least 102 every time he's taken the field this season. Isaiah Carpenter was another key signal caller, throwing for 143 yards and a pair of TDs while completing 72.7% of his passes.

Grants' loss dropped their record down to 7-5. As for St. Pius X, the victory (which was their fifth in a row) raised their record to 9-1.

Grants does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for St. Pius X, they will take on Chaparral at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. The Sartans will be up against the Lobos' rather soft defense (which has allowed 26.36 points per game), so fans could be in store for a big offensive performance.
