While Lee's Summit's victory against Staley wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. The Tigers sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 28-25 win over the Falcons on Friday. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Tigers have posted since November 8, 2024.
Preston Hatfield went supernova, rushing for 204 yards and three touchdowns while picking up 11.3 yards per carry, and also throwing for 134 yards on only eight passes. His longest rush was for an impressive 67 yards, which helps to explain his lofty yards per carry total. Karsten Fiene was Hatfield's top target, picking up 43 receiving yards, while also rushing for 105 yards and one TD.
Lee's Summit's run defense was locked in: Staley could only muster three yards per carry. The Tigers' run defense has been on the up-and-up: they allowed five yards per carry earlier this season, but they've only allowed 9.17 on average over their last five games.
Meanwhile, Lee's Summit North faced Lee's Summit West in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Friday. The Broncos narrowly escaped with a win as the team sidled past the Titans 20-17. The Broncos haven't had any issues with the Titans recently, as the game was their sixth consecutive victory against them.
A big part of Lee's Summit North's win came down to the chemistry between Stephen Thomas Jr and his top target William Ray. Thomas Jr threw for 151 yards and a pair of touchdowns while Ray picked up 96 receiving yards and a pair of scores.
The victory got Lee's Summit back to even at 4-4. As for Lee's Summit North, their record is now 6-2.
Friday's matchup might be decided on the ground. Lee's Summit has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 253.5 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Lee's Summit North struggles in that department as they've been averaging 155.8 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's contest turns into a tough fight on the ground.
Lee's Summit ended up a good deal behind Lee's Summit North in their previous meeting back in November of 2024, losing 29-15. Can the Tigers avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
