Basketball Preview: Sahuaro Cougars vs. Mica Mountain Thunderbolts
Sahuaro is on a nine-game streak of home wins, while the Thunderbolts are on a eight-game streak of away wins: one of those streaks is about to end. The Sahuaro Cougars will take on the Mica Mountain Thunderbolts at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. One thing working in Sahuaro's favor is that they have posted big point totals in their last eight games.
Sahuaro pushed their score all the way to 59 on Wednesday, but even that wasn't enough to win. They fell just short of Salpointe Catholic by a score of 61-59.
Even though the team lost, they still had their share of impressive performances. One of the best came from Cisco Llamas, who scored 24 points along with five assists and three steals. Llamas is crushing the steal category: he's posted at least two every time he's taken the court this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Nick Ponds, who scored 14 points along with five assists and five rebounds.
Meanwhile, Mica Mountain stacked a ninth blowout win onto their ever-increasing hoard on Friday. They breezed by Douglas at home to the tune of 87-58. Given Mica Mountain's advantage in MaxPreps' Arizona basketball rankings (they are ranked 57th, while the Bulldogs are ranked 232nd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Sahuaro's defeat ended a seven-game streak of away wins and brought them to 20-3. As for Mica Mountain, their victory bumped their record up to 22-2.
Everything came up roses for Sahuaro against the Thunderbolts in their previous matchup back in December of 2022 as the team secured a 81-53 win. Does Sahuaro have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Thunderbolts turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
