Softball Recap: Make It Five in a Row for Matanzas

Matanzas had to skate by with only a one-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the seven-run drubbing they dealt University on Monday. The Matanzas Pirates put the hurt on the University Titans with a sharp 8-1 win. This was payback for the Pirates, who suffered a 3-2 loss the last time these two teams met.

LEAH STEVENS spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on three hits and racked up 13 Ks. She has been consistent : she hasn't given up more than one earned run any time she's pitched this season.

At the plate, ASHLEY SAMPSELLE was incredible, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 3-for-3. She also put up a double, which was her first of the season. Another player making a difference was RUBY FOGEL, who scored a run while going 3-for-4.

Matanzas was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .444. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as University only posted a batting average of .136.

The victory keeps them at an undefeated 5-0. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.2 runs on average over those games. As for University, the defeat snapped their winning streak at three games and leaves them with a 4-2 record.

Coming up, Matanzas will challenge St. Augustine at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Matanzas is facing St. Augustine at the right time seeing as St. Augustine is stuck on a six-game losing streak. As for University, they will take on Lake Brantley at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
