Softball Game Preview: Millington Cardinals vs. Laker Lakers

The Millington Cardinals will head out to square off against the Laker Lakers at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. Laker took a loss in their last contest and will be looking to turn the tables on Millington, who comes in off a win.

Millington is headed in fresh off scoring the most runs they have all season. They blew past Sandusky 14-1 on Monday. Perhaps unsurprisingly given the team's high-flying offense, the game also marked the team's biggest win of the season.

Morgan Matusik was a major factor no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, pitching five innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with one triple, one stolen base, and one double. She also brought in an RBI, marking her first of the season.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Reese Holmes, who scored two runs while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances. She also put up a double, which was her first of the season. Another player making a difference was Kamyrn Blackmer, who scored two runs while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances.

Meanwhile, Laker unfortunately couldn't capitalize on their home-field advantage in their season opener. They lost 13-5 to Reese on Thursday. Sadly, the defeat continues a streak the team started last season, making it four in a row.

Millington now has a winning record of 3-2. As for Laker, their loss dropped their record down to 0-1.

Millington took their victory against Laker in their previous meeting back in April of 2024 by a conclusive 12-2 score. Will the Cardinals repeat their success, or do the Lakers have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
