Baseball Recap: Valhalla Norsemen vs. Grossmont Foothillers

Valhalla extended their losing streak to 19 on Thursday, dropping them down to 1-23. They lost 19-2 to the Grossmont Foothillers. Unfortunately, that's the third time they've come up short against the Foothillers this season, with their most recent defeat being a 18-2 loss back in April.

As for Grossmont, with the win, they broke their six-game losing streak and moved their record to 11-14. Their hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.

For Grossmont's part, Jesse McCormick made a splash no matter where he played. He tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. McCormick also tossed no walks, which is notable because Grossmont is 5-2 when he allows at most one walk, but 6-12 otherwise. McCormick was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in two of his five plate appearances with three runs. Those three runs gave him a new career-high.

In other pitching news, Enzo Gaipa looked comfortable as he pitched four innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances.

Back at the plate, Tyler Holmes was incredible, going 3-for-4 with one home run, three runs, and three RBI. He has become a key player for Grossmont: the team is undefeated when he posts at least one home run, but 7-14 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Reid Barnett, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with four RBI and one run.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming contests. Valhalla will head out to square off against Helix at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Norsemen's pitchers better be ready for this one: the Scotties have averaged an impressive 7 runs per game this season. As for Grossmont, they will venture away from home to take on El Capitan at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Vaqueros have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 6.54 runs per game on average), something the Foothillers will no doubt try to take advantage of.
