Recap: South Effingham Mustangs vs. Evans Knights

This season hasn't been kind to the South Effingham Mustangs, who are still winless after their 12th match. They took a serious blow against Evans on Saturday, falling 83-53. The loss unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for South Effingham in their matchups with Evans: they've now lost four in a row.

When it comes to explaining why South Effingham lost, one person who can't be blamed is Corbin McGuire. Despite the final result, he scored 14 points along with six assists and four steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points McGuire has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Will Harlin, who scored 14 points along with three steals and three blocks.

Evans' victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Taj Ford, who scored 13 points along with five rebounds and two steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Brice Wallace, who scored 15 points.

South Effingham bumped their record down to 0-12 with that defeat, which was their 14th straight on the road. That rough patch can't be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 50.3 points per game. As for Evans, they have been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four games, which provided a massive bump to their 8-9 record this season.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. South Effingham on the road again on Tuesday and play against Glynn Academy at 7:00 p.m. on January 16th. Glynn Academy presents a significant challenge as they come into the match much higher ranked than South Effingham in Georgia (Glynn Academy is ranked 42nd, while South Effingham is ranked 469th). As for Evans, they will head out on the road to square off against Groves on Monday. Groves knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with flashy point totals in its past three contests -- so hopefully Evans likes a good challenge.
