Volleyball Recap: Holy Cross Cougars vs. Mercy Jaguars

Holy Cross faced Mercy in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Thursday. The Cougars fell just short of the Jaguars by a score of 3-2. The Cougars have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back matches.

Holy Cross wouldn't go down easily and took Mercy into a fifth set but they suffered a heartbreaking seven-point loss. The final score came out to 25-23, 23-25, 23-25, 25-10, 15-8.

Brianne Stoff paced Holy Cross' offense, picking up 18 kills. Stoff got some help from Leah Evans and her 43 assists. Finally, Delaney Stoff kept Holy Cross' defense grounded, leading the team with four blocks.

Mercy was led to victory by Addison Randol and Reese Houston. Randol had five aces and three digs, while Houston had 12 digs and two assists. What's more, Randol racked up 25 assists, the most she's had since back in September. Ellie Sharpe also deserves some recognition as she served her first ace of the season.

Holy Cross' defeat dropped their record down to 19-7. As for Mercy, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 19-10.

Holy Cross wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next contest, a 3-1 victory against Kentucky Country Day on the 6th. As for Mercy, they have also already played their next match, a 3-0 win against DuPont Manual on the 4th.
