Basketball Recap: Maryvale Starts off Right with Win over Boulder Creek

Maryvale had to travel to play their first game of the season, but the final result was worth the trip. They came out on top in a nail-biter against the Boulder Creek Jaguars on Wednesday, sneaking past 79-76. For the Panthers, this counts as revenge for the 69-54 win the Jaguars walked away with the last time they faced one another back in November of 2024.

Maryvale got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Adrian Stubbs out in front who went 9-for-20 to rack up 21 points along with six assists and six steals. Stubbs' big performance that evening made it six games in a row in which he has scored at least 18 points. Another player making a difference was Mikel Montgomery, who dropped a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds.

Maryvale smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 16 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive boards in 14 consecutive matchups dating back to last season.

Loss or not, Boulder Creek got some senior leadership from Brayden Newton and Noah Van Fredenberg. Newton shot 78% from the field en route to 22 points, while Van Fredenberg went 5-for-6 on his way to 13 points and seven boards. Newton is on a roll when it comes to shooting accuracy, as he's posted one of at least 50% in the last five games he's played dating back to last season. Carson Stuepfert was another key player, putting up eight points.

Maryvale wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next game, a 70-43 win against Queen Creek on the 21st. As for Boulder Creek, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, an 86-43 defeat against Millennium on the 21st.
