Basketball Recap: Sabino Takes a Loss

Sabino suffered their closest loss since December 29, 2023 on Monday. They fell just short of the Walden Grove Red Wolves by a score of 64-61. The Sabercats have been going strong on the season, but this is now their second defeat in a row.

Despite the loss, Sabino saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Jayda Haley went 11 of 19 en route to 28 points. Haley's evening made it four games in a row in which she has scored at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Chayil Combs, who posted 12 points.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Walden Grove to victory, but perhaps none more so than Angel Amarillas, who dropped a double-double on 16 points and 15 rebounds. Amarillas is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last four games she's played. Another player making a difference was Ariana Gamillo, who dropped a double-double on 16 points and 11 boards.

Sabino's defeat dropped their record down to 8-3. As for Walden Grove, the win (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 7-3.

Sabino will face off against Snowflake at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Walden Grove, they didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next matchup, an 84-9 victory against Cholla on the 11th.
