The West Brunswick Trojans will face off against the South Brunswick Cougars at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. West Brunswick is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.2 runs per game this season.
West Brunswick took a ten-run defeat the last time they faced off against Topsail, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. West Brunswick narrowly escaped with a victory as the squad sidled past Topsail 6-4. The win was some much needed relief for the Trojans as it spelled an end to their four-game losing streak.
Olivia Brown spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four earned runs on two hits and racked up 11 Ks. Those hits were her first of the season.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Kady Long, who scored two runs while going 2-for-4. Brooklyn Somers was another key player, scoring a run while going 2-for-3.
Meanwhile, South Brunswick came tearing into Friday's game with three straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 11.7 runs), and they left with even more momentum. Their pitcher stepped up to hand the Screaming Eagle a 3-0 shutout.
The result came thanks to Kina Davis's shutout, as she gave up just a hit and racked up 15 Ks. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than one walk any time she's pitched this season.
At the plate, Carly Clewis was excellent, going 1-for-3 with one home run and two RBI. Another player making a difference was Tabby Martin, who scored two runs and stole a base while getting on base in all three of her plate appearances.
South Brunswick hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now struck out at most two strikeouts in four consecutive matches.
South Brunswick pushed their record up to 10-1 with the victory, which was their 17th straight at home dating back to last season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.3 runs on average over those games. As for West Brunswick, their victory was their first in the conference, bumping their conference record up to 1-4 and their overall record up to 5-4.
Both West Brunswick and South Brunswick just can't seem to miss. West Brunswick has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 9.4 hits per game. However, it's not like South Brunswick struggles in that department as they've been averaging only 2.9 hits. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
West Brunswick might still be hurting after the 17-0 loss they got from South Brunswick in their previous matchup back in May of 2024. Can West Brunswick avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
