Basketball Recap: Cynthia Longoria Leads a Balanced Attack to Beat Edinburg

La Joya hadn't done well against Edinburg recently (they were 0-9 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Friday. The La Joya Coyotes walked away with a 40-31 victory over the Edinburg Bobcats. This was a revenge game for the Coyotes: when they faced off against the Bobcats on January 7th, they had to take a 58-52 loss.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead La Joya to victory, but perhaps none more so than Cynthia Longoria, who posted five points and four steals. Another player making a difference was Jaylani Ozuna, who scored seven points and eight rebounds.

Despite the defeat, Edinburg saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Yuri Perez earned 15 points. That was a full 48.4% of Edinburg's points, marking the third time in a row she's had more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Makayla Olvera, who put up no points along with nine boards and three steals.

La Joya is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four contests, which provided a massive bump to their 14-18 record this season. As for Edinburg, their loss ended a four-game streak of away wins and brought them to 19-13.

La Joya will square off against Edinburg North at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Edinburg, a feisty cat fight is on tap when the Edinburg Bobcats challenge the Economedes Jaguars at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The timing is sure in Edinburg's favor as the squad sits on four straight wins at home while Economedes has been banged up by five consecutive losses on the road.
