Softball Recap: Western Wayne Comes Up Short

Western Wayne extended their losing streak to 11 on Tuesday, dropping them down to 2-11-1. They were two runs away from ending the streak, but they lost a 3-1 heartbreaker at the hands of the Holy Cross Crusaders. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Crusaders this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 10-4 back in April.

As for Holy Cross, the victory (which was their sixth in a row) raised their record to 13-2. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.5 runs on average over those games.

For Holy Cross' part, AVA SCHMIDT spent all eight innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on five hits and racked up nine Ks. SCHMIDT has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in 14 consecutive appearances.

At the plate, MCKINLEY GRIFFITHS was incredible, going 2-for-3 with two doubles, one stolen base, and two RBI. That's the most doubles she has posted since back in March. KIRSTYN ZIGRAY also deserves some recognition as she snagged her first stolen base of the season.

Looking ahead, Western Wayne will face off against Honesdale at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. The Hornets have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 14.13 runs per game on average), something the Wildcats will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Holy Cross, they are taking a road trip to square off against Bristol at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Crusaders 2.3, the Warriors 1.4) so any runs scored will be well earned.
