Basketball Recap: Cushman Takes a Loss

Cushman was the 68-42 winner over Mater Bay Academy when they last played one another back in January of 2024, but their luck changed this time around. The Cushman Cougars took a 49-34 bruising from the Mater Bay Academy Rays on Wednesday.

Despite the loss, Cushman saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Fremgen Jackson posted 12 points.

Mater Bay Academy got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Jose Echane out in front who went 6 of 9 on his way to 12 points along with eight rebounds and five blocks. Echane has been hot for a while, having posted eight or more boards the last 12 times he's played. Another player making a difference was Shandon Bullard, who had nine points in addition to five rebounds and five steals.

Cushman dropped their record down to 9-9 with the defeat, which was their fifth straight on the road dating back to last season. As for Mater Bay Academy, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 13-3.

Cushman does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Mater Bay Academy, they will square off against Sunset at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Mater Bay Academy is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 59.8 points per game this season.
