Flag Football Recap: Nona Moreno's Menacing Defense Leads Rio Mesa over Buena

After losing to Buena the last time they met, Rio Mesa decided to demonstrate that turnabout is fair play. The Spartans put the hurt on the Bulldogs with a sharp 26-6 win on Thursday. The result was nothing new for the Spartans, who have now won eight contests by 20 points or more so far this season.

Jadeline Gonzalez looked great while leading her team to the win, throwing for 215 yards and four touchdowns. That's the most passing yards she has posted since back in September.

Rio Mesa didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off four passes before the game was over. Nona Moreno led the group effort, picking up two of those interceptions all by herself.

Rio Mesa is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 9-13 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 9.8 points on average over those games. As for Buena, they dropped their record down to 10-15 with the defeat, which was their sixth straight at home.

Looking ahead, Rio Mesa will take on Ventura at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Cougars' defense has only allowed 14.9 points per game this season, so the Spartans' offense will have their work cut out for them. As for Buena, they will square off against Oxnard at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Bulldogs' defense better be ready for this one: the Yellowjackets have averaged an impressive 27.4 points per game this season.
