Christ School and Asheville School (Independent) are an even 5-5 against one another since January of 2020, but not for long. The Christ School Greenies will face off against the Asheville School (Independent) Blues at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. One thing working in Christ School's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points every time they've taken the court this season.
Christ School is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another highly-ranked state team: Paul VI, who was ranked third in their home state at the time (Christ School was ranked second). Christ School fell 74-67 to Paul VI on Sunday. The Greenies' loss signaled the end of their five-game winning streak.
The loss doesn't tell the whole story though, as several players had good games. One of the most active was Zymicah Wilkins, who dropped a double-double on 22 points and 13 rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Madden Collins, who went 7 of 14 en route to 20 points.
Meanwhile, everything went Asheville School (Independent)'s way against Carolina Day on Thursday as Asheville School (Independent) made off with a 73-53 win. The Blues have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won nine matchups by 20 points or more this season.
Asheville School (Independent)'s win came from a few key players Christ School will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Heimir Helgason, who dropped a double-double on 19 points and 11 boards. His evening made it 13 games in a row in which he has scored at least ten points. Miki Gacic was another key player, dropping a double-double on 17 points and ten assists.
Christ School's defeat ended a four-game streak of away wins and brought them to 21-2. As for Asheville School (Independent), the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 14-6.
Friday's contest will pit two of the most dominant forwards against one another: Wilkins and Helgason. Wilkins has been dynamite this season: he has averaged 15 points and 1.9 steals on 56.4% shooting. For his part, Helgason has averaged 20.9 points, 2.7 blocks, and 7.8 rebounds.
Everything came up roses for Christ School against Asheville School (Independent) in their previous meeting back in January, as the team secured a 74-46 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for Christ School since the squad won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
