Softball Game Preview: Winn Mavericks vs. Southwest Dragons

Winn is 0-10 against Southwest since March of 2019 but things could change on Tuesday. The Winn Mavericks will challenge the Southwest Dragons at 7:00 p.m.

Winn fell victim to McCollum and their airtight pitching crew on Friday. They took a 4-0 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Cowboys. The Mavericks have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Mayte Figueroa spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four runs (all of which were unearned) on two hits and racked up nine Ks. Furthermore, she didn't allow a single earned run, the first time she has blanked an opponent since back in March of 2024.

Meanwhile, Southwest waltzed into their contest on Friday with four straight wins... but they left with five. Everything went their way against the Indians as they made off with a 13-1 win. The Dragons might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won three games by six runs or more this season.

Southwest got a great performance from Sienna Diaz as she didn't allow a single earned run over five innings pitched. Diaz has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks any time she's pitched this season.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Tommie Betancourt, who scored four runs and stole a base while going 2-for-3. That's the most runs she has posted since back in March of 2024. Another player making a difference was Madisyn Alaquinez, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-3.

Southwest kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 16 hits. That's a new trend for them: they were averaging 3.6 hits per game earlier this season, but in their last 15 matches they've averaged 9.

Southwest's victory was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 6-4. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.0 run on average over those games. As for Winn, their defeat dropped their record down to 2-10.

Winn suffered a grim 12-2 defeat to Southwest when the teams last played back in March of 2024. Can Winn avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
