Matanzas is a perfect 9-0 against St. Augustine since March of 2015 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Tuesday. The Matanzas Pirates will venture away from home to face off against the St. Augustine Yellow Jackets at 6:00 p.m. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Matanzas has five straight wins, St. Augustine has nine straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
Matanzas will bounce into Tuesday's match after beating University, who they had gone 0-4 against in their four prior meetings. Matanzas was the clear victors by an 8-1 margin over University on Monday.
LEAH STEVENS spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on three hits and racked up 13 Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one earned run any time she's pitched this season.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on ASHLEY SAMPSELLE, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 3-for-3. She also hit a double, marking her first of the season. Another player making a difference was RUBY FOGEL, who scored a run while going 3-for-4.
Matanzas was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .444. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as University only posted a batting average of .136.
Meanwhile, St. Augustine lost 13-2 to Interlachen on Thursday.
Gus Campbell made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and scored two runs while going 1-for-2. That's the most runs she has posted since back in April of 2024.
St. Augustine's loss dropped their record down to 0-6. As for Matanzas, their victory bumped their record up to 5-0.
St. Augustine's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Matanzas hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .313. It's a different story for St. Augustine, though, as they've only averaged .153. Will they be able to contain Matanzas' hitters?
Matanzas came out on top in a nail-biter against St. Augustine in their previous meeting back in April of 2024, sneaking past 9-7. Does Matanzas have another victory up their sleeve, or will St. Augustine turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
