Basketball Game Preview: West Oso Bears vs. Mathis Pirates

West Oso has gone 3-0 against Mathis recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Tuesday. The West Oso Bears will host the Mathis Pirates at 1:30 p.m. West Oso will be strutting in after a victory while Mathis will be coming in after a loss.

West Oso is headed into the game after thoroughly thrashing Godley: they outscored them in every quarter. West Oso came out on top against Godley by a score of 49-36 on Saturday. The win was all the more spectacular given the Bears' disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 270th, while the Wildcats are ranked 76th).

Meanwhile, Mathis played a tough match last Friday in which they were outscored in every quarter. They might have been a little too into the holiday spirit, gifting London an easy 51-28 victory. Mathis was down 40-14 at the end of the third quarter, which was just too much to recover from.

Despite the defeat, Mathis saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Amerie Smith posted 21 points along with five boards and five steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Smith has scored all season.

West Oso has been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six contests, which provided a nice bump to their 17-5 record this season. Those victories came thanks to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 24.7 points per game. As for Mathis, their loss dropped their record down to 7-6.

West Oso strolled past Mathis in their previous meeting back in December of 2022 by a score of 56-42. Will West Oso repeat their success, or does Mathis have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
