League recap: West Marion extends winning streak with victory over Newton

3A Region 8 recap Nov. 7, 2012

West Marion extended the longest winning streak in 3A Region 8 this week by beating Newton, 69-0. The victory was the 11th in a row for the team.

West Marion took down the Tigers 69-0 last week, the largest margin of any game. Vonnie Harrell ran for 140 yards in the win.

Sumrall's dynamic duo of Will Simon and Austin Watts proved tough for Southeast Lauderdale to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Simon threw for 478 yards and five touchdowns and Watts had 220 yards receiving. Devontae Watts helped Sumrall's passing attack out by catching eight balls for 172 yards.

Justin Parker made the biggest impact on defense this week as the Bobcats beat the Tigers. The 5-foot-9 senior pulled down one interception, forced two fumbles, recorded one fumble and racked up one sack.

Sumrall's Simon and Watts have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Simon has thrown for 4074 yards this season, while Watts, a 6-foot-1 receiver, has 94 catches for 1773 yards. Brad Duncan's team's Harrell leads the league in rushing yards with 1267.

The Trojans led the league in scoring this week after putting up 69 points on Newton. Harrell in the win.
