Preview: Union City Chargers vs. Quincy Orioles

Union City has enjoyed a two-game homestand but will soon have to dust off their road jerseys. They will take on the Quincy Orioles at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Hopefully Union City focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 11 two weeks ago.

Union City scored the most points they've had all season to find success. They blew past Maple Valley 54-10 at home. The victory was just what Union City needed coming off of a 40-13 loss in their prior matchup.

Union City's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Willow Austin, who scored 12 points along with five rebounds and two steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Austin has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Ellie Williams, who scored six points along with five steals.

Meanwhile, this season hasn't been kind to Quincy, who are still winless after their eighth matchup. They suffered a tough 55-34 defeat at the hands of Bronson last Tuesday. While losing is never fun, Quincy can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Michigan basketball rankings (they are ranked 592nd, while Bronson is ranked 122nd).

Despite the defeat, Quincy had strong showings from Kendyl Musielewicz, who scored 15 points along with three steals, and Alyssa McCavit, who scored nine points along with nine rebounds and two steals.

Union City's victory ended a 11-game drought at home dating back to last season and bumped them up to 1-7. As for Quincy, their defeat was their seventh straight at home dating back to last season, which bumped their record down to 0-8.

This contest is one where the number of possessions is likely to be a big factor: Union City have been smashing the glass this season, having only averaged 27.9 rebounds per game. However, it's not like Quincy struggles in that department as they've been averaging only 26.7 rebounds per game. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.

Union City came up short against Quincy when the teams last played back in January of 2023, falling 43-30. Can Union City avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
