Baseball Recap: Mattoon Comes Up Short

If Mattoon was feeling good fresh off their 11-1 takedown of Springfield Southeast last Friday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. Mattoon took an 8-4 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Richland County Tigers on Monday. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last five times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.

Mathew Miller made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went 1-for-3 with one home run. That home run was his first of the season.

Mattoon's loss dropped their record down to 5-3. As for Richland County, they now have a winning record of 3-2.

Looking ahead, Mattoon will look to defend their home field on Thursday against Sullivan at 4:30 p.m. As for Richland County, they will venture away from home to challenge Fairfield at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Fairfield's pitching crew has only allowed 3.4 runs per game this season, so Richland County's hitters will have their work cut out for them.
