Basketball Recap: Mt. Vernon Comes Up Short

Mt. Vernon lost against Mooresville back in January of 2024 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Tuesday. The Mt. Vernon Marauders fell just short of the Mooresville Pioneers by a score of 45-42. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest defeat the Marauders have suffered since November 14, 2024.

Despite the loss, Mt. Vernon saw an underclassman step up: freshman Zoey Wood went 11 of 18 en route to 28 points and six rebounds. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Wood has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Gabby Thomas, who posted eight points and three steals.

Mooresville got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Ava Shafer out in front who dropped a double-double on 15 points and ten boards. The dominant performance gave Shafer a new career-high in rebounds. Randee Garringer was another key player, putting up 11 points and six boards.

Mt. Vernon's defeat dropped their record down to 14-6. As for Mooresville, they are on a roll lately: they've won 11 of their last 14 matches, which provided a nice bump to their 14-6 record this season.

Mt. Vernon has already played their next game, a 44-37 victory against Greenfield-Central on the 24th. As for Mooresville, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 72-31 loss against Plainfield on the 24th.
