Softball Recap: Turner County's Luck Changes for the Better on Monday

Turner County had lost eight straight, but after bumping their record up to 3-18 on Monday that streak is in the rearview. They walked away with a 9-5 win over the Monroe Golden Tornadoes. This was a revenge game for the Titans: when they faced off against the Golden Tornadoes on September 3rd, they had to take a 16-15 defeat.

Madison McRae spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered five earned runs on three hits and racked up nine Ks.

On the hitting side, Janiyah Smith and Aalunah Edwards did most of the damage at the plate: Smith went 2-for-4 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs, while Edwards went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one triple. Those two hits gave Smith a new career-high. Azaria McKinney was another key player, earning three runs and two stolen bases.

As for Monroe, their loss was their fourth straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 7-14. Those road defeats can't be blamed on the team's hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.3 runs over those games.

On Monroe's side, Layla Clay was cooking despite her team's loss, getting on base in all four of her plate appearances with two stolen bases and one run. The team also got some help courtesy of Ariya Lee, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming contests. Turner County will face off against Brooks County at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Trojans have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 11.88 runs per game on average), something the Titans will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Monroe, they will square off against Randolph-Clay at 5:00 p.m. on Monday.
