Basketball Recap: Thursday's Defeat Ends Gateway's Winning Streak

Gateway was the 41-37 winner over Timber Creek when they last played one another back in January of 2024, but their luck changed this time around. The Gateway Panthers took a 65-58 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Timber Creek Wolves on Thursday. Despite running the score up even higher than they did in their prior game last Friday (55), the Panthers still had to take the loss.

Despite the loss, Gateway saw an underclassman step up: freshman Ashlynn Day dropped a double-double on 27 points and 14 rebounds. Day is also crushing it when it comes to steals: she's grabbed at least four every time she's taken the court this season. Another player making a difference was Evana Rivera, who dropped a double-double on 14 points and 13 boards.

Even though they lost, Gateway smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 11 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive rebounds in ten consecutive matches.

Serene Exalant continued her habit of posting crazy stat lines for Timber Creek, almost dropping a double-double on 25 points and nine rebounds. With that strong performance, Exalant is now averaging an impressive 15.1 points per game. The team also got some help courtesy of Kareena Ortiz, who went 6 for 11 from beyond the arc en route to 18 points.

Gateway moved to 18-5 with that defeat, which also ended their three-game winning streak. As for Timber Creek, the victory (which was their sixth in a row) raised their record to 21-4.

Gateway wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next contest, an 86-19 win against Seabreeze on the 4th. Timber Creek has also already played their next game (against Boone), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing.
