Baseball Recap: Orange County's Luck Takes a Turn for the Worse on Thursday

Orange County dropped their record down to 4-7 on Thursday, which also ended the team's four-game streak of wins. They came up short against the Monticello Mustangs, falling 8-2. The Fighting Hornets were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Mustangs apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in May of 2024.

As for Monticello, they have been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five matches. That's provided a massive bump to their 5-7 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.8 runs on average over those games.

For Monticello's part, Brayden Nash tossed a big game, pitching six innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off three hits.

At the plate, Monticello got a big performance out of Owen Sexton, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with three RBI and one stolen base. Those two hits gave Sexton a new career-high. Gavin Halliday also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.

Coming up, Orange County will take on Riverbend at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. The Fighting Hornets are on a three-game streak of home wins, the Bears a five-game streak of away wins, meaning someone's leaving a streak behind. As for Monticello, they will square off against Fluvanna County at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
