Basketball Recap: South Mecklenburg Comes Up Short

After flying high against Lake Worth on Friday, South Mecklenburg came back down to earth. The Sabres took a blow against the New Hanover Wildcats on Saturday, falling 71-41. The game marked the Sabres' lowest-scoring contest so far this season.

Despite the loss, South Mecklenburg still got an impressive performance from Reason Foster, who posted five points. Foster is also on a roll when it comes to shooting accuracy, as he's posted one of at least 100% in the last three games he's played. Chelan Chudgar was another key player, putting up seven points.

Leading New Hanover to victory were Kellum Brown and Jazir Wright-Mcghee. Brown almost dropped a double-double with 18 points and nine rebounds, while Wright-Mcghee went 5-for-8 to rack up 16 points in addition to five assists and five boards. Thanks to that strong game, Wright-Mcghee now owns an excellent 46.4% field goal percentage. The team also got some help courtesy of Ny'Zion Ballard, who shot 67% from the field on his way to 12 points and seven rebounds.

South Mecklenburg has traveled a rocky road recently, having lost four of their last five matchups. That's put a noticeable dent in their 3-5 record this season. As for New Hanover, the win was the third in a row for them, bringing their record up to 4-1.

Coming up, South Mecklenburg will square off against Charlotte Catholic at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Sabres' defense better be ready for this one: the Cougars have averaged an impressive 63.3 points per game this season. As for New Hanover, they will take on Hopewell at 8:00 p.m. on Friday. The Wildcats will be up against the Titans' rather soft defense (which has allowed 66 points per contest), so fans could be in store for a big offensive performance.
