The Greenfield Bruins will face off against the Pacific Grove Breakers at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. The two teams each escaped (but just barely!) with wins against their previous opponents.
The scorekeeper got an easy start on Tuesday as neither Greenfield nor Gonzales made it on the board until the fifth inning. The Bruins sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 4-2 win over the Spartans. The Bruins haven't had any issues with the Spartans recently, as the game was their sixth consecutive victory against them.
Nate Trujillo spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned (and one unearned) run on two hits and racked up eight Ks.
At the plate, Greenfield saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Frankie Hernandez, who went 1-for-3 with one run.
Greenfield hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Gonzales struck out eight times.
Meanwhile, Pacific Grove won against Rancho San Juan on Thursday with five runs and they decided to stick to that run total again on Tuesday. The Breakers beat Alisal by the very same score they won with in their prior game: 5-4. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last three times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.
The team relied heavily on Brody Edmonds, who went 2-for-4 with one stolen base and two RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of North Kirk, who went 1-for-2 with two runs and one stolen base.
Pacific Grove's win bumped their record up to 13-9-1. As for Greenfield, their victory bumped their record up to 13-10.
Greenfield's speedy runners might be the difference in Thursday's game. The Bruins have been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.2 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Pacific Grove, though, as they've been averaging only 1 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Greenfield continue to outrun the ball?
Greenfield suffered a grim 14-0 defeat to Pacific Grove in their previous meeting back in April. Can the Bruins avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
