Softball Recap: Santa Cruz Valley Takes a Loss

If Santa Cruz Valley was riding high fresh off their 19-0 takedown of ALA - Anthem South last Wednesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. Santa Cruz Valley took a 6-3 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Horizon Honors Eagles on Thursday. The Dust Devils haven't had much luck with the Eagles recently, as the team has come up short the last three times they've met.

Layla Brown spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and four unearned) runs on ten hits. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than two walks in nine consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Audrina Reyes made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and scored a run while going 1-for-2. She also put up a double, which was her first of the season. Another player making a difference was Mikayla Leos, who went 3-for-4 with one RBI.

Santa Cruz Valley's loss dropped their record down to 9-4. As for Horizon Honors, they pushed their record up to 8-1 with the win, which was their third straight on the road.

Looking ahead, Santa Cruz Valley will be playing at home against Willcox at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. Willcox has struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 9.76 runs per game on average), something Santa Cruz Valley will no doubt try to take advantage of. We've got a battle between Eagles coming up. Horizon Honors' pitchers better be ready for this one: Desert Christian has averaged an impressive 7.5 runs per game this season.
