Softball Recap: Canton Extends Home Winning Streak to Eight

Canton entered their tilt with Peoria Notre Dame on Wednesday with two consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with three. They were the clear victors by a 9-1 margin over the Irish. Considering the Little Giants have won eight matchups by more than five runs this season, Wednesday's blowout was nothing new.

Tori Birch made a splash while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out ten batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned run off five hits (and not a single walk). That's the most strikeouts she has posted since back in March. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with three RBI, one run, and one double.

In other batting news, Canton let Allison Wheeler and Natalie Downing run wild. Wheeler went a perfect 3-for-3 with two stolen bases and two runs, while Downing went 3-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. Another player making a difference was Makaylynne Correa, who went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.

Canton was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .379. They are a perfect 10-0 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.

Canton pushed their record up to 12-3 with the victory, which was their eighth straight at home. Those home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.8 runs over those games. As for Peoria Notre Dame, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost three of their last four contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 7-7 record this season.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Canton will host Washington at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Little Giants 3.1, the Panthers 1.4) so any runs scored will be well earned. As for Peoria Notre Dame, they will welcome Manual at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.
