Football Recap: Dynamic Duo of Mykayla Degen and Delilah Guachino Lead Valley Center to Victory

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Valley Center). They enjoyed a cozy 26-12 win over the San Pasqual Golden Eagles on Monday. That result was just more of the same for these two, as the Jaguars also won the last time the pair played back in October of 2024.

A big part of Valley Center's victory came down to the chemistry between Mykayla Degen and her top target Delilah Guachino. Degen rushed for 106 yards and one touchdown on only six carries while Guachino gained 103 total yards and three touchdowns. What's more, Degen racked up 29 passing yards, the most she's had since back in October of 2024.

Valley Center didn't let much get past them through the air: they limited San Pasqual to a completion percentage of just 42.1%. That dominant aerial defense primarily came from two players: Guachino and Degen, who each logged two passes deflected. Valley Center wasn't nearly as limited: they posted one of 29.4%.

Despite the loss, San Pasqual still got an impressive performance from Ruby Cortez, who rushed for 134 yards and a pair of TDs while picking up 8.4 yards per carry. Cortez has become a key player for the Golden Eagles: the team is 2-1 when she posts at least 100 rushing yards, but 1-2 otherwise.

Valley Center's first win this season bumped their record up to 1-3. As for San Pasqual, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost three of their last four games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 3-3 record this season.

Valley Center has already played their next contest, a 19-0 loss against Escondido Charter on the 11th. As for San Pasqual, they also didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next matchup, a 32-27 victory against Coastal Academy on the 11th.
