Basketball Recap: St. Albans Comes Up Short in High-Profile Game with East Fairmont

On Saturday, St. Albans faced East Fairmont in a battle between two of the state's top teams. The St. Albans Red Dragons opened the new year with a less-than-successful 64-55 loss to the East Fairmont Bees. The Red Dragons were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Bees apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in December of 2019.

St. Albans' loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Jaycee Elzy, who posted 23 points and six boards. That was a full 41.8% of St. Albans' points, marking the fourth time in a row she's scored more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Alayna Hermansdorfer, who dropped a double-double on 11 points and 12 rebounds.

Even though they lost, St. Albans smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 15 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 12 offensive rebounds in six consecutive matchups.

East Fairmont was led to victory by Emma Moore and Kailee Haymond. Moore went 5 of 11 on her way to 19 points in addition to eight boards and five assists, while Haymond went 5 for 11 en route to 17 points along with six rebounds and four steals. Moore's afternoon made it four games in a row in which she has scored at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Kasey Rogers, who had seven points along with seven boards and four steals.

Having lost for the first time this season, St. Albans fell to 5-1. As for East Fairmont, they have been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six contests, which provided a nice bump to their 6-3 record this season.

St. Albans wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next game, a 58-45 defeat against Hurricane on the 15th. East Fairmont has also already played their next matchup, a 74-30 victory against Preston on the 10th.
