Basketball Recap: Esme Calkins Key Part of a Team Effort in Pirates Win

After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Western Alamance, Riverside-Durham was happy to have turned things around on Tuesday. They came out on top against the Person Rockets by a score of 42-34. For the Pirates, this counts as revenge for the 46-22 win the Rockets walked away with the last time they faced one another back in December of 2023.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Riverside-Durham to victory, but perhaps none more so than Esme Calkins, who made all 6 shots she took for 14 points. Another player making a difference was Au?Nehstii Hagans, who posted 11 points.

Despite the loss, Person saw an underclassman step up: freshman Ava Mandizha dropped a double-double on ten points and ten rebounds. Those ten points set a new season-high mark for Mandizha.

Riverside-Durham's record now sits at 3-4. As for Person, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 3-5.

Riverside-Durham will venture away from home to challenge South Johnston at 10:00 a.m. on December 26th. As for Person, they wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next contest, a 30-25 victory against Cedar Ridge on the 20th.
