As Joanna McFarland’s prep basketball career crawls closer to its conclusion, one would assume that the Derby post player had reached her threshold of big numbers and broken records.

But the senior continues to amaze.

McFarland roughed up Wichita Southeast Saturday by scoring 47 points and ripping down 31 rebounds in a 67-59 overtime win over the Golden Buffaloes. Much of her scoring success occurred at the charity stripe where McFarland made 17-of-19 attempts.

Although the Panthers committed 33 turnovers during the contest, McFarland’s teammates found a way to get her the ball. The 6-foot-3 senior then more than made up for the Panther gaffs.

Speaking of records, Southeast-Saline’s Stephanie Frost overcame a little bench riding to post 39 points and 20 rebounds in a 72-61 win over Minneapolis in the semifinals of the Sacred Heart Blue and Gold Classic Basketball Tournament last Thursday.

The 39 points posted by Frost shattered the single game tournament record of 28 points she shared with former teammate Shayla Seim. Her 20 caroms matched the tournament mark held by Ell-Saline’s Tricia Walker since 2006.

“When we first started tonight I was having a horrible game,” Frost told the Salina Journal. “But everybody else stepped up and kept us in the game. Before halftime coach was yelling at me and telling me I needed to be more of a leader.”

Frost then scored 12 points in the title game Friday, but it wasn’t enough as Salina Sacred heart captured its fifth straight classic title with a 57-42 triumph over the Trojans.
