Basketball Game Preview: Wagener-Salley War Eagles vs. Branchville Yellow Jackets

The Wagener-Salley War Eagles and the Branchville Yellow Jackets will round out the year against one another at at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. Both teams took a loss in their last game, so they'll have plenty of motivation to get the 'W'.

Wagener-Salley is likely headed into the matchup with a focus on the second half, which is when things went downhill against Pelion last Wednesday. Wagener-Salley fell 42-30 to Pelion. The game marked the War Eagles' lowest-scoring contest so far this season.

Meanwhile, Branchville had to suffer through a 63-32 loss at the hands of Orangeburg-Wilkinson. While losing is never fun, the Yellow Jackets can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' South Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 186th, while the Bruins are ranked 15th).

Wagener-Salley will need focus on slowing down Kyran Glover, one of several Branchville players who made an impact when they last played. He went 5 of 8 en route to 14 points and five rebounds. Glover has been hot for a while, having also posted two or more steals the last 14 times he's played. Another player making a difference was Javon Williams, who posted seven points and five rebounds.

Even though they lost, Branchville was working as a unit and finished the game with ten assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Orangeburg-Wilkinson only posted four assists.

This is the second loss in a row for Wagener-Salley and nudges their season record down to 1-6. As for Branchville, they have traveled a rocky road recently having lost three of their last four matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 2-4 record this season.

Wagener-Salley strolled past Branchville in their previous meeting back in December of 2018 by a score of 70-55. Does Wagener-Salley have another victory up their sleeve, or will Branchville turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
