Baseball Recap: South Salem Extends Winning Streak to Five

South Salem strolled into their game on Wednesday with a perfect record and they left with the same. They put the hurt on the Grant Generals with a sharp 10-3 win. The Saxons might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won three matchups by seven runs or more this season.

Noah Scharer made a big impact no matter where he played. On the mound, he tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. What's more, he posted three strikeouts, the most he's had since back in March of 2024. He was even better at the plate, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 3-for-4. He is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last four games he's played.

In other pitching news, Harrison Buckingham looked comfortable as he struck out six batters over four innings while giving up just two earned runs off three hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts any time he's pitched this season.

Back at the plate, Sawyer Nelson was incredible, going 3-for-4 with one home run, two stolen bases, and four RBI. That's the most stolen bases he has posted since back in March of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Gavin Price, who went 2-for-5 with one triple, two RBI, and one run.

South Salem kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits every time they've taken the field this season.

South Salem's victory was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 5-0. As for Grant, their loss dropped their record down to 4-2.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. South Salem will take on Mountain View at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday. As for Grant, they will head out to square off against Jesuit at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. The Crusaders' pitching crew has only allowed 3.8 runs per game this season, so the Generals' hitters will have their work cut out for them.
