Softball Recap: Saint Francis Picks Up 13th Consecutive Win

Saint Francis had already won 12 in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 7.3 runs) and they went ahead and made it 13 on Friday. They never let the Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory Fightin' Irish get on the board and left with a 10-0 win. Considering the Lancers have won 16 matches by more than five runs this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.

Saint Francis got a great performance from Hailey Nguyen as she didn't allow a single earned run while striking out 12 over five innings pitched. With that strong performance, Nguyen is now averaging an impressive 5.1 strikeouts per game.

At the plate, Saint Francis let Peyton Tsao and May Meltz run wild. Tsao went 2-for-3 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs, while Meltz went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, three runs, and three RBI. Those three RBI gave Meltz a new career-high. Jaime Oakland was another key player, going 2-for-4 with three RBI, one stolen base, and one run.

Saint Francis was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .448. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .320 or higher in six consecutive games.

Saint Francis' victory was their 15th straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 23-2. Those road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.9 runs on average over those games. As for Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory, they are on a four-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 10-10.

We've got plenty of inter-league action coming up soon. Saint Francis will square off against rival Archbishop Mitty at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Lancers 1.3, the Monarchs 2.8) so any runs scored will be well earned. Meanwhile, Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory is set to take on their familiar foe St. Ignatius College Preparatory at 4:00 p.m. on Monday.
